Papai Contemporary is a project space in Oslo focusing on Latin American and African artists based in Europe and their dialogue with the Scandinavian art scene. Founded in 2023 by Felipe R Pena, himself an immigrant from Brazil, the gallery starts from the family apartment he shares with artist Thora Dolven Balke and their two daughters. The space is a vibrant and essential addition to the dynamic art landscape of Norway.
Papai's exhibitions and events foster meaningful dialogues, not only within the immigrant community but also with the broader public. As a sister gallery to Cavalo, based in Rio de Janeiro and co-founded by Felipe R Pena with Ana Elisa Cohen in 2016, Papai Contemporary inherits a legacy of artistic excellence and a commitment to pushing boundaries.
Papai Contemporary invites visitors to engage deeply with artworks in a domestic setting that blurs the lines between public and private, challenging traditional notions of art consumption. This unconventional approach creates a space for deeper conversations and embraces diverse narratives, celebrating the multi-cultural experience and enriching Norway's cultural fabric. As a trans-continental bridge, Papai Contemporary weaves connections, fosters conversations, and offers a fresh perspective on contemporary art, inviting audiences to engage with art in a personal and meaningful manner.
